Situated in Manzala lake, 9km southwest of Port Said city.
It was founded by refugees from Tanis "the greek name of the now called San-Al-Hagar town"
after which the city was named.
The island was famous for its treasures, fortresses, fertile land, it also was an important port, exporting agricultural products of Egypt, particularly textiles, throughout the Middle East.
Demolition of the island took place after Saladin had ordered destroying its fortresses for not be taken as a fortress by the Crusaders, that was in 1192 A.D.
The island is part of Ashtoum El-Gamil protectorate under the supervision of Port Said governorate.
