Sandwich Harbour is a small and unusual bay south of the salt works of Walvisbai. It is a rather dangerous area, like quicksand. In the Tourist Office of Walvis Bay you could see and read a report of a driver, who lost his car in the sand.
The name has nothing to do with "sandwich" or with its inventor, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718 - 1792). His favourite Bread and Butter snack was named after him.
The name originates from the Dutch word "zand vis",meaning "sand fish". There is a similarity to the city of Walvis / Walvisbai.
