Historic resort hotel built in 1874. Site of the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the 1905 Russo-Japanese War, for which Teddy Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize. The hotel was closed in 1982 and sat abandoned for many years. As can be seen from the 1979 photo, over half of the hotel was demolished during this period, but the historic core remained. It was saved by a ferocious grass roots struggle, restored and reopened in 2003.

Located on the ocean and an hour north of Boston with convenient access of Interstate 95.

  • Stayed two nights in Sept 08. Very nice, and they did a nice job on the wedding reception which we attended. Fantastic room on 4th floor with ocean views. Pictures from that visit.
