The Capuchin monks arrived in Hania by order of Pope Paul V in 1566, led by father Ignatius IV Arita and established their first monastery in Crete, exactly where it is today.
The building of the Capuchin monks monastery was built in its present form in 1842 and expanded with the addition of a wing in 1860. Last radically repaired in 1990–1991.
