History:
The Cog Railway was the brainchild of Major John Hulbert. Its construction was funded by Zalmon G. Simmons, the founder of the Simmons Mattress Company, and took place between 1889 and 1891.
In 1925 it was purchased by Cripple Creek gold mining magnate and Broadmoor Hotel owner Spencer Penrose. The hotel and the Cog Railway have remained connected ever since, and today are both owned by Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz.
