Mons Town Hall (Mons (municipality))

Belgium / Hennegau / Mons / Mons (municipality) / Grand Place
guildhall, listed building / architectural heritage

The architect Mathieu de Layens from Soignies, author among others of the Town Hall of Louvain, was called to draw up the plans. It must have been a building in flamboyant Gothic style but it seems that the plan (which was not found) was not respected, in particular by the abandonment of the second floor, which was nevertheless planned. The Renaissance-style bell tower was added in the 18th century. It contains a bell dating from 1390, the Bancloque, and carries a dial clock overlooking the Grand Place as well as a light clock. The 19th century saw various modifications to the facade, the removal of the stone mullions upstairs and various stone ornaments.

In its current state, the Town Hall presents a remarkable set of various buildings housing a large part of the municipal services. These buildings have undergone many modifications over the centuries, restorations and additions of elements from other buildings, such as a Gothic fireplace from Trazegnies Castle, carved doors from the 16th century from demolitions, a fireplace from the castle from Gouy-lez-Piéton, another 1603 chimney from the Château d'Havré.
