Closed in 1976 upon the opening of the City of Ames Resource Recovery Plant, which processes municipal waste and sorts out what can be burned in the municipal coal/refuse power plant. If an emergency exists, the landfill can be re-opened again, otherwise, all non-burnable waste from Story County is trucked to the Boone County, IA landfill.
