railway, tunnel

A complex of three railway tunnels with space for 4 tracks that were closed around 1980 due to a Beeching suspension of passenger service and then a later collapse of freight traffic. The original two single bore tunnels date from Victorian times and the modern two track tunnel dates from an electrification project in 1953. Today one of the older tunnels is used by National Grid for a 400kv transmission lines.
There is currently pressure to restore the old Woodhead Route to an active rail line.
