This dam serves about 1,040 hectares agricultural areas in the subdistrict of Waingapu, the capital of East Sumba district in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This dam is about 12 kilometers away from the Waingapu downtown. You may have a good view in this place. The dam was constructed in mid 1990s.
Traditionally local people planted corn as their main food crop. But with this dam they have to grow paddy, an expertise that most of them could be assumed even in a decade. As a result food crisis hit these areas in recent years. The situation is worse since the political upheaval in the country has pushed prices very high. Children are the worse hit as there are thousand suffering malnutrition. Many are very acute and the area has comparatively children's high mortality rate.
