Braconne Army Depot Housing for Americans (Angoulême)

This housing complex of duplex homes was built for American Army personnel stationed at the Braconne Army Depot a few kilometers to the east. Although the depot no longer exists, many of us remember our childhood experiences in these homes, our experiences in Angouleme and our wonderful French neighbors.

  • Hi Kevin. I remember your family quite well. I was the Catholic Chaplain Assistant there. I left Braconne in July 1964, I believe your dad was being promoted to BG at that time. Braconne was a great place!

  • Does anyone temember Audrey Tracy or Kathy and Lois my 2 sisters. Kathy died 2013 to cancer. I remember living there for 3 yrs. I loved my childhood there. I had several friends. The Miller sisters. Lisa and Scooter Hayes, Donna Lauchstead and many more. Remember that old playground? Victor Wiggins. Omg!!

  • Your father was a fine man. I was a dentist at the 11th General Dispensary from August 1961 to July 1965, present when your father took command. We share your feelings that this was a very good place at a very good time. It seems closer in time than the 50 years ago when we left.

  • My father, CWO Bertram Steffen, was stationed there from 6/56 to 2/58. We lived in a small town of Saint Surin. My maiden name is Susan Steffen.
  • My dad staff sergeant Kenneth L. Jones served in Braconne from 1962-1965 and worked in Post Engineers during that time. He lived on post 1 year and off post for 2 years. His first sergeant was Rowcamp.

  • The depot is now an industrial area with garbage truck storage, recyclers, etc. route 141 is now a four lane highway. Angouleme and LaRochefoucauld now house major shopping centers on their outskirts. Mike Karp, a soldier at Braconne in '54 and '55.

  • My grandfather, James Lewis, was stationed there in the 60s for around 7 years with his wife and 3 daughters. They were originally from Birmingham, Alabama. My mother, Joyce, took me to Angouleme 10 years ago and we visited the current residents of the home she and her family lived in.
  • I lived at Braconne sometime in the early 60s, when I was somewhere around 5-9 years old, so I don't remember a whole lot. We also lived at Poitiers. My dad was Sgt Ed Poston. I don't have any photos, so I have no idea what it looked like. I do remember riding my bike to the market in Angoulême. I sure don't remember it as built up as it is now.
  • my father was the commanding officer at that time and we also moved to Orleans after leaving Braconne. Colonnel Kiely, my sisters were Patty and Meredith, my name is Kevin. I have very fond memories of the place. It was a great time and a great experience.
