The Hardy Tree is notable in that the trunk and base of the tree grows between a pile of gravestones. In the mid-19th century the writer Thomas Hardy, then a trainee architect, was tasked in the controversial clearance of part of the churchyard to make way for the railway. The grave markers were piled near a tree, which then grew around them.
