Construction was begun by Prince Sihanouk in 1963, and the hotel opened in 1969. It closed when he was overthrown in 1970. The Lon Nol government used the building as barracks. It was abandoned by the Khmer Rouge. The ruined building was bought by investors from Singapore in 1988, rebuilt and reopened in 1991 as the Sofitel Hotel Cambodiana. The French chain ceased managing the hotel in 2001.
