Hwangmaesan

Korea (South) / Kyongsangnam / Kochang /
 mountain, green area

Hwangmaesan (mountain) at 1,108m/3,635ft-high, encompasses the three peaks of Habong, Jungbong and Sangbong. In spring, azalea and rhododendron blossoms take over the entire mountain.

Hwangmaesan is the filming site of several Korean movies. In 1983, the mountain was designated as the County Park.

Hwangmaesan’s “Hwang” means prosperity and “Mae” means preciousness or dignity - put together “Hwangmae” means abundance, so the mountain it self symbolizes prosperity.

Muhakdaesa, a great monk who died protecting the Goryeo Dynasty, practiced asceticism here.
