In 1872, the station was open and became Tokyo's main gateway. In 1914, after the tokyo Station was opened, this station was renamed Shiodome Sta., and became a freight terminal. The station building was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake (1 Sept. 1923) and the subsequent fire. In 1934-1936, the station (not this building) was renovared; Shimbashi freight terminal existed until 31 Oct. 1986. In 1991, the ruins of the station building were discovered during archaeological excavations, and in 1996, the Japanese Government decided to have it reconstructed and made part of the Old Shimbashi Station Historic Site.
