In 1941, the Ashuelot River was dammed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, creating Surry Mountain Lake. Along its western edge is a large recreation area, and a popular place for swimming in the summertime. There is also a private campground just south of the recreation area. It is still operated by the Corps, and it currently costs $1.00 per person per day.
