On November 23, 1953, an F-89C Scorpion (s/n 51-5853A) was scrambled from Kinross Air Force Base near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to intercept an unidentified target over Lake Superior. Piloted by 1st Lt. Felix Moncla, Jr, with Second Lt. Robert L. Wilson as the RIO, the aircraft eventually closed in on the object at about 8000 ft. Ground Control operators tracked the Scorpion and the unidentified object as two "blips" on the radar screen. The two blips grew closer and closer, until they seemed to merge as one return. Then the single blip disappeared from the radar screen. A search and rescue operation was quickly mounted, but no trace of the plane or the its crew was ever located. Due to the mysterious nature of the craft and crew's disappearance, many have speculated that the F-89 was pursuing a UFO and was either captured or destroyed.
