military, research, ship, surface-to-air missile site / sam, United States Navy, missile launch facility
US Navy surface-to-air weapons testing site. Designated LLS-1 (Land Locked Ship), this facility was created to test the Navy's Terrier and RIM-8 Talos surface-to-air missile system in the 1950s. Since then it has been used to test the Standard family of missiles as well as the AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense System. Although not officially commissioned as a Navy vessel-for obvious reasons-it did receive a mock christening the day it was completed. Special permission from Congress was required to name it USS Desert Ship.
