Carlsmith is literally on the rocks-much of the ground is made up of lava rock, and small boulders are scattered throughout the area. It’s not your usually sandy beach, but it’s definitely got an appeal of its own. On several points, the rocks form small, robust tide pools reminiscent of giant outdoor Jacuzzis. Natural cold springs are also found throughout the beach, offering a welcome refreshment on those hot Hilo afternoons. The water is surprisingly calm, however, as the current is far off the shore and rarely reaches the park itself. Families often let their kids wander into the water on their own, since the rocks do a great job of fending off harmful surf.

Showers, restrooms, and shaded picnic areas are built at convenient points away from the rocky grounds.
