The Robins Center is home to the Richmond Spiders, who compete at the NCAA Division I level and in the Atlantic 10 Conference in all varsity sports (except football, in which the Spiders are in the Colonial Athletic Association). The University's athletic program offers eight men's teams and nine women's teams. Richmond is one of the smallest schools in the nation to field all of its varsity sports teams at the NCAA Division I level. The Robins Center also serves as the focal point for a very active intramural and recreational sports program open to all students. Completed in 1972, the Robins Center includes a 9,000-seat basketball arena, faculty and staff offices, and conference rooms. This $10 million facility was a gift of distinguished alumnus and former trustee E. Claiborne Robins, R'31, and his family.
