Jhajha is one of the important station in Indian Railways between Howrah and Delhi main line. Earlier it was one of the biggest steam engine loco shed in Asia. Biri(people use to smoke, like a cigarette; made from kendu leaf stuffed with tobacco) is the main in house industry here. Nagi and Nakti are the famous bird scentury where the migrated birds comes in winter. Simultala is a famous tourist place. Durgamandir, Jakhrajsthan and dudhijor are the famous place. Unfortunately still a block town but has all the criteria of being a subdivision. Four higher secondary schools and two colleges are here.

I lived in Jhajha in the early 1950s till the 60s. This was during my childhood. I returned again from Europe and left most reluctantly in 1972 to join my relatives in Australia. Jhajha is the most beautiful place on earth. It is the cradle of Krishna and the bosom of Sita. A muslim fakir told me when I was a little child that Rama left the forest Of Ayodhya and went south to find the beautiful Sita, his wife. But actually Rama turned east by mistake . After many weeks of travelling he rested on the banks of the Nakti river in Jhajha. When he awoke in the early winter morning he met Lakshman mending his broken bow. Eventually Lakshman and Rama turned south to find Sita. I am 65 years old now and still remember this beautiful story. After Jhajha,Simultala is the most beautiful place. I am very disappointed that Jhajha was not made the district headquarters. When I was in Jhajha in the 50s and 60s, the Jamui people used to come to Jhajha for shopping or to catch the train.as everything was available because Jhajha had a large European community.I am a european Catholic and now live in Sydney, Australia since 1972. I hope to visit Jhajha one last time with my grandchildren. So, goodbye my friends and good luck to you and beautiful Jhajha.

  • Gilbert Edgar Freitas, Sydney, Australia. wrote : I came to JhaJha in the late 1940's as a boy because my late father was a railway official and was posted there. This was just after India got Independence from the British. At that time there was a big European community in JhaJha and most of them, like my father worked for the Indian Railways. Those were the days of great fun and frolic for we children and teenagers spent a lot of time during the school holidays picnicking, shooting and fishing. Sometimes we kids used to group up and go to the lake where all the beautiful birds assembled. We sat by the Nakti river, played games, cooked our lunch and sang songs. At that time there was no dam. In the mid 50's the Bihar government constructed a dam and the volume of water increased. During the winter, the ducks came and so did the geese. Occasionally we saw deer and neel gai. Sometimes we heard the roar of the tiger in the evenings or the cry of a panther. The Santals told us that the tigers came from a place called Dumka which was seven hills away. But the good times had to end as some of us finished schooling and had to go to the big cities to further our education. But most of our fathers retired and left India to go to England, USA, Canada and Australia. JhaJha and Nagi Dam and Simultala are the most beautiful places on earth. I will never forget the beautiful birds, animals and most of all the beautiful hills, especially when sitting in front of a steam locomotive and coming down from Simultala into JhaJha, with the three talaos on your left and the magnificent hills to the right and the railway colony in front. Just breathtaking. Will never forget my beautiful JhaJha. I have gone old now and at 67 still hope that one day I will visit the Nagi dam and JhaJha with my grandchildren for the last time before I pass on.
  • Jhajha is facing today naxal problems a lot which is more dificult to progress against any other city around it.
