Lielvārde

Lielvārde, which lies some 52 km southeast of Riga has had a human settlement for at least 3,000 years. The first mention of the area occurs in in the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia who mentioned that in 1201 the Baltic hill-fort (named Dievukalns 'Hill of the Gods' in Latvian and Lennewarden 'landing place' by the Vikings) was taken in fief by Albert of Buxhoeveden.
