  Nice little town, one of the oldest towns in whole South Africa. Freaking hot, but it's in the semi-desert, so you're happy if it's only about 40°C.

  A beautiful town with loads of history and friendly, genuine people. The real jewel is 30km away at Nieuw-Bethesda where Helen Martins created her Owl House - a stunning, priceless work of art that has no equal, whether in the Karoo or in South Africa for that matter. Her co-worker in the project in the 50s & 60s was a black man - long before such relationships were considered normal. With her vision, she has left this part of the Karoo with a treasure that will outlive all of us. She was laughed at and scorned by the burghers of Bethesda and no doubt Graaf Reinett - but she's gettin' the last posthumous laugh! Go and honour this brilliant woman by looking at her art creations in her Owl House - a long victorian cottage with a tin bull-nosed verandah - which is now a museum.
