the largest lake in Honduras with a surface area of 285 square kilometers (110 mi²) and an average depth of 15 meters (50 ft). At an altitude of 700 meters (2,300 ft), it lies in a depression formed by volcanoes.

The bad news is that mosquitoes are particularly vicious here, the good is that the cases of dengue fever in Honduras, a mosquito-born disease, are down from 17,500 by October last year to 13,250 this year.

This lake is one of the general areas that The Friends of Barnabas Foundation sends medical missions to minister to the people of this area who do not have access to much in the way of medical services. By the end of 2007 this organization will have sent seven (7) medical mission teams to this area, and five (5) medical mission teams to the el Cajon area. Right now, August 18 - 26, 2007, a team is there consisting of members of members of Reveille United Methodist Church (Richmond, Virginia, USA) and others.
