Lincoln is the county town of Lincolnshire with a population of 100,000 It is one of the few places in the UK to have a name of Roman Origin. The romans built a town called LINdum COLoNia - which means colony by the pool, and this was later combined to give its current name.
It is the origin of the surname of Abraham Lincoln, the famous US President. There are many places in the USA named after Lincoln as a result.
Lincoln has a very impressive cathedral which was the worlds tallest building for several centuries. It also has a university. Lincoln was the site of the worst recorded earth tremor on in England - the earthquake destroyed the cathedral spire.
The first prototype Tank was built in Lincoln, and Lincoln Castle holds one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta, and is on display to the public.
