Opened in 2002 on the site of popular Pier Approach swimming baths, the IMAX 419-seat cinema was an expensive but ill-conceived project that failed to arouse much local interest and which subsequently closed its doors in 2005.
The edifice is widely regarded as an eyesore and at one time was voted Britain's second ugliest building. As you can imagine, it is constantly under disussion with a view to replacing it with something more useful to the town. However, recent proposals have included constructing a Casino in its place.
Demolition started in February 2013.
