Luxor Temple of Amun (Luxor)

Egypt / Luxor / Luxor
temple, archaeological site, open air museum, interesting place, historic landmark

The Luxor Temple Complex in what was the southern part of ancient Thebes, was dedicated to the God Amun, and was known as Opet-resyt, "Southern Opet," thus serving as a counterpart to the temple precincts of Karnak further to the north. The temple complex was built principally during the reigns of Amenhotpe III (c. 1389-1351 BC) and Ramesses II (c. 1279-1214 BC). Additional shrines and structures were built in later centuries. During the Roman period, the area around the temple was surrounded by a fortified enclosure. The Arabs called the impressive ruins Madinat al-Uqsur ('Luxor"), the "city of Palaces," because they were impressed by its magnificent edifices and buildings. Luxor is 670 kms south of Cairo. It remained the seat of power from 2100 to750 B.C.
