The Institute's predecessor in South Vietnam was "Service des Pêche de l'Indochine" founded on September 14th, 1922. On January 1st, 1930, the Service des Pêche de l'Indochine" was officially changed its name into the "Institut Océanographique de l'Indochine". The Institute of Marine Research under the State Committee for Science and Technique had been established in 1967. After the liberation of South Vietnam in 1975, the "Institut Océanographique de l'Indochine" was integrated with the Institute of Marine Research of State Committee for Science and Technique, forming the Institute of Marine Research under the leadership of the Vietnam Institute for Sciences. The name "Institute of Oceanography" was changed since 1993 after the Vietnam Institute for Science changed its name to National Center for Natural Sciences and Technology. At present, the Institute of Oceanography (IO) is under the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology.
Since the establishment, the Institute of Oceanography has implemented many worth studies that have contributed significantly to the exploitation and conservation of the East Sea. There are 1,100 published studies in which, 62.6% on marine biodiversity; 11.6% on marine physics; 7.6% on ecology and environment; 5.4% on marine geology, geomorphology and 4.4% on marine chemistry and biochemistry.
Site Map
The IO is situated 5 km south of Nha Trang city, Central Vietnam. Nha Trang natural habitat makes it become an ideal location for the establishment of oceanographic research in biodiversity such as marine fauna and flora, mangrove forests, brackish water lagoons, sandy beaches, rocky coasts and coral reefs.
Functions and Tasks:
1.
Research on the scientific and technological problems including:
*
Fundamental investigation and study on the natural conditions, living and non-living resources (minerals, oil and gas, maritime transportation…); processes happening in the hydrosphere, atmosphere and lithosphere in the whole area of the Vietnamese sea waters and the South China Sea including the coastal water basins (estuaries, lagoons, bays) and the islands.
*
Investigation and study on the status and processes of marine environmental pollution, proposals of the solutions for pollution treatment in order to ensure the ecological balance and the stable development of the resources.
*
Study on the special phenomena in the sea serving the prevention of calamities such as the storm surge, tsunami, erosion and deposition.
*
Study on the marine techniques and technologies to serve the designation and establishment of marine constructions, aquaculture development, extraction of bio-active substances in marine organisms and the products from the sea water, designation and production of oceanographic equipment and apparatus.
2.
Coordinate with the research and producing agencies in the country to implement and apply the research results into the production and life, transmission of the advanced technologies in the above mentioned fields from the foreign countries into Vietnam.
3.
Participating in the training on the scientific and technological researche and oceanography.
4.
Develop international cooperation in the fields of oceanography.
5.
Construction and develop facilities for the scientific and technological researches, implementation, application and transmission of advanced technologies in the research fields of the IO.
6.
Management of staffs, infrastructure and other properties of the IO
