Originally, the two Watuppa Ponds were connected, with a railroad bridge and a car bridge going over the Narrows, the point where the two ponds were closest together. Eventually these bridges were filled in, creating a small amount of land on the south side of the roadway, which was expanded greatly in the 1960s with the addition of Interstate 195. The area is still referred to by locals as the Narrows, however. Today there are a few businesses and restaurants along the western end of the road.
