School 16 was demolished in 2005, and the new Pine Hills Elementary School opened in this location on January 3, 2007. The school's sprawling wooden playground, which was impressive when opened in 1986, was also demolished in 2005.

The older building, pictured on the right, was originally built in 1906, was remodeled and enlarged twice. There is a similar entrance facade to the right. The previous school 16 was at one time located on lower Hudson Avenue and was a school for African-American children before the Wilberforce School was constructed, Today, School 16 on North Allen Street is an excellent example of quality education in Albany.

Comments

  • The three pictures on the right are the rear of the school as it looked in the 1970's. This is where the kids played before school started. Anyone remember "ledgies"?
  • I liked the old look better...
