Wat Chedi Ched Thaeo, วัดเจดีย์จ็ดแถว, is a large and important Buddhist monastery that was located inside the town wall of Si Satchanalai. There are 33 chedis in various styles set in a cosmology pattern. The late Prince Damrongrajanuphap suggested that this temple might have been the royal cemetery of the Sukhothai Dynasty.
The chedis in Wat Chedi Ched Thaeo can be divided into 3 groups:
1. Lotus bud shaped chedi. This type is the unique style of Shkhothai art. This chedi has a slender shape with a high square base. The top of these chedis is in a lotus bud shape with decorative stucco in a lotus petal pattern.
2. Prasat style chedi. This chedi has a square shape with a set of tops or roofs. Prasat style chedis in Wat Chedi Ched Thaeo display a lot of art influence from other cultures, such as Khmer culture and Pagan culture.
3. Round chedi. This type is the chedi with a round bell-shaped structure and a cone-shaped top. Some scholars suggest that the origin of this chedi is in the burial mounds of ancient India.
