temple, ruins, buddhist monastery
Wat Chang Lom, (TH) วัดช้างล้อม, was built during the Sukhothai Period, circa 14th century A.D. It is a large Buddhist monastery which is located at the center of the ancient town of Si Satchanalai. Some Scholars suggest that it was built in 1285 A.D., based on the stone inscription No. 1 that says King Ramakhamhaeng dug up the Buddha relics in order to pay homage to them before re-burying them and building the main chedi over the remains.
The main chedi of Wat Chang Lom is a round-shaped stupa, indicating art influenced by Sri Lanka. The base is high and square. The front of the base has eight round-relief lion sculptures, and the other sides feature nine lion sculptures. There is a larger lion sculpture at each corner of the base, totaling 39 lion sculptures around the base.
(Note: the historical marker calls the sculptures elephants, but these sculptures are definitely lions instead.)
Information from an historical marker at the temple.
