Mediterranian arboretum and botanical garden. The botanical garden at the Villa Thuret was first created in 1857 by Gustave Thuret, an algologist and botanist known for his work on reproduction in algae. He conducted acclimatization trials with his friend Edouard Bornet, author of the first classification of lichens. Thuret’s work was continued by his successors Charles Naudin, who contributed to the discovery of the foundations of genetics, and agronomist Georges Poirault. [...]

The garden is designed like a classic 19th century romantic garden. Devoted to experimental cultivation of trees and shrubs in open ground it has the same kind of collections as an arboretum, but with only one to three examples of each species. It is also a trials garden where botanical species are introduced to observe and interpret their growth and development.
