Tivoli Nature Preserve is the second largest urban nature preserve in New York state following Central Park in New York City. The city purchased the land in 1851 and built its man made lake to help supply water to the the adjacent Arbor Hill neighborhood. By the 1980's the condition of old "Tivoli Park" had begun to deteriorate. Community and environmental groups led clean-up efforts and the park was redesignated as a nature preserve.
