Designed c. 1928 by Walker & Gillette with George F. Hall as the Industrial trust Tower, the 428-foot tall building is the tallest building in Rhode Island and was, at the time of its completion, the third-tallest in New England. The interior was reportedly designed by Theo. Hofstatter & Co. for the Industrial Bank of Providence.

During the 1950s it gained the nickname "Superman Building" by locals for its similarity to the Daily Planet building in the Superman cartoons. It was known for a while as the Fleet Tower, before the merger of Fleet and Bank of America. At 82, it is the oldest building to currently hold the title of tallest building in a state. It is a signature building in Providence, and similarly to One Financial Center its beacon is colored differently for seasons.

Along with that building and 50 Kennedy Plaza between the two, the three buildings make up the Providence "skyline" in the cartoon "Family Guy."
