A modern luxury business class hotel built to replace the historic 1850's Hotel Angleterre, which was demolished by the Soviets.

The original hotel was where poet Sergei Yesinin hanged himself in 1925. The announcement of the demolition in 1987 caused some of the first open protests in Leningrad. The protesters were unsuccessful and the hotel was demolished, replaced with a modern hotel whose facade was meant to recall the original.

The Angleterre is part of the adjacent and more luxurious Hotel Astoria. The two are jointly managed by Rocco Forte Hotels and, while they have separate lobbies and public rooms, their upper guestroom floors are connected.

  • A very nice hotel, but you are definitely paying extra for the undeniably attractive ambiance.
