In 1909, fertilizer and chemical executive Edwin Pugh Baugh and his bride, the former Grace Howard Munnikhuysen, built what is still one of Maryland's largest and grandest houses of the early 20th century.
The brick mansion was patterned after an English Tudor-style chateau, Les Bucailles, that Mr. Baugh admired in the seaside resort of Villers-Sur-Mer on the Normandy coast of France.
Known today as Wroxeter-on-Severn, the home originally was given Welsh name, Uchllyn-on-Severn, because although Mr. Baugh was a Philadelphian by birth and a Marylander by choice, he traveled extensively and styled his home after aspects of several Old World countries.
