Alderholmen is a former island in Gävle. The western part was the main harbour of Gävle until the second half of the 19th century when a new harbour (Nyhamn, "New Harbour") was built on the eastern part of the island. Already in 1909 Nyhamn was replaced with Fredriksskans, a couple of kilometers east of Alderholmen.
In 1859 the first railway in Gävle built its station on Alderholmen. The freight station closed in the 1960's but the railway connection remained until the late 1980's to a couple of industries. In the 1980's there were plans for residential development on Alderholmen and all the industries were closed and moved. However, it wasn't until 2008 the first residents could move in. Today nothing of the railway remains on Alderholmen; the residential development is focused on associating to pre-industrial shipping.
The canal that separated Alderholmen from the mainland was originally a branch of the river and was filled in the 1960's and 1980's. Only parts of it remains.
