Site Description and History
The Agrico Chemical site is located at the northwest corner of Fairfield Drive and Interstate 110 north of Pensacola, Florida in Section 05, Township 02S, Range 30W at 30° 27′ 09.8914″ N, 87° 13′ 28.9648″ W. The site covers approximately 35 acres. The surrounding land use consists of residential, municipal, commercial and industrial zoned areas. Bayou Texar is located approximately 7,000 feet northeast to southeast of the site.
The facility began operation in 1889 and produced sulfuric acid from pyrite (iron sulfide). From 1920 to 1979, several different companies, including Agrico Chemical Company produced fertilizer on site. All equipment was removed from the site in 1979 when operations at the site ceased. Aerial photographs taken from 1940 through 1990 indicate that wastewater ponded in four general areas on and adjacent to the site. The soils on the site are contaminated with arsenic, lead, and fluoride. The groundwater contaminants are fluoride, chloride, sulfate, nitrate/nitrites, arsenic, and radionuclides. The groundwater plume is discharging to Bayou Texar.
Threat
The soils and groundwater contain varying levels of arsenic, lead, radium, and fluoride. This site poses an imminent hazard to groundwater but does not pose a current risk to people since there are currently no drinking water wells located within the contaminant plume. Since groundwater in the Agrico site area discharges to Bayou Texar, there is the potential for adverse effects on the bayou ecosystems. Currently, no adverse effects have been identified.
