On 7 December 1977 a American U2 crashed on take off at RAF Akrotiri for a mission and as a result the Ground Operations Cell and the Meteorological Office were destroyed. Six personnel died plus USAF Pilot Capt. Robert A. Henderson and many casualties with severe burns were treated at TPMH. The smoke was visable on the drive from RAF Troodos Mt Olympus.
