Cowombat Flat

Australia / New South Wales / Cooma /
 plain, grassland

Grassy flat near the source of the Murray river. The Murray here is one metre wide when there is water in it.
There is still the remains of a RAAF DC3 that force landed in here in 1954 after one engine failed. Unfortunately it hit a tree, one crewmember was killed and three survived.

  • this was not helpful at all. I know its just bush and stuff, but u should've added more. even this very comment is longer than your article! I am not making fun of ur article, that would be mean. I am just giving u some feedback. I get that there is nothing really to add, but I'd say u did some more research! maybe give us more info about the Murray and how the people were killed. maybe give a better map, like were it is located in Australia. I did enjoy reading ur two sentances, just add more, and u will be very good! :D
  • Cowombat Flat is a very special place for at least three four reasons ... This is the source of the Murray River (as mentioned in other photos, when we walked in a couple of years ago). This source of the Murray specifies one end of the Black-Allan line -- the VIC/NSW state border from here to Cape Howe. This line was surveyed in difficult country by Black and Allan in 1870. A famous air crash occurred here in 1954 when an airforce Dakota was forced to land in the trees on the edge of the flats. One man was killed, the others survived. Some of the wreckage is still visible to the right of 'Cowombat Flat 2'. Last but definitely not least in this household, Thowra the mighty fictional Silver Brumby ranged here in the 1950's and 60's, the undisputed King of the Brumbies. His adventures enchanted many enthusiastic 10-year-old girls (and quite a few older readers of Elyne Mitchell's evocative series). Such a wide angle shot messes the perspective -- even though it looks quite flat here Cowombat Flat is actually a valley, a frost hollow, surrounded by significant hills. teekay72, Allan and 3 more people faved this darryl jones 6y Interesting story Julian. The countryside certainly does look fantastic and it seems like a wonderful place to visit. Peter Sundstrom 6y Been a while since I've been here. I've had a dip in the Murray source. Thought it would improve the flavour for the Adelaide population. Julian Robinson 6y Peter Sundstrom It must have been a small (and cold) dip! When we were there you'd be lucky to get water past your ankles. I hope Adelaidians appreciated the gesture. More bushwalks have to go on the agenda, especially since you have two young no-doubt enthusiasts who need to see proper bush before they return to Fangorn Forest and Rivendell. spelio 6y Julian Robinson how far does one have to walk to reach this nice historic spot.. One could spend a lifetime visiting the head of all our rivers... We drove down the headwaters of the Condermine.....
