  • The word "Kopli" or "Kupli" means a speedy river. There is Austric equivalent for same meaning is "Klong" means a speedy river. Tai-Ahom calls it "Nam-Kio" means a speedy river. From these "Kopli" or "Kupli" words, the word "Kopili" originates. According to some Sanskrit scholars this relates to Sage Kapil hence the name "Kopili". They further connected the Hermitage of Sage Kopil on the bank of this river. Kopili region was a part of ancient Kopili kingdom of Karbis, Dimalang of Kacharis, Kadali, Dabaka etc. In medieval period, initially this was under king Viswasundara or Vasundhara Varmana. Pushya Varamana's (A.D. 350) descendants also occupied this land for certain period, when this region had some trade connection with North China Silk Road. Late medieval time, this region was under the Bhuyans, Kacharis, Tai-Ahom, Koch and Mughals...
