Mahmoud Mukhtar Museum (Cairo)

Museum and Mausaleum of the father of Egyptian modern sculpture - Mahmoud Mukhtar. A selection of his work in stone and relief
panels, exhibited along with other items from the artist's life. The museum, where his sculptures were neglected for years, was finally
restored and reopened to the public in October 2003. He also lies buried here in a small crypt.

Mukhtar is considered by many to be the natural descendant of the great ancient sculptors who created the Temples of Karnak and
Luxor and other timeless colossal treasures. His best-known work, the "Nahdet Misr" statue, graces one of Cairo’s most important
squares in front of Cairo University (not far away).

  • My lady friend and I visited this museum on our second-to-last night in Cairo. A wonderful discovery. Lots of art-deco period work in stone and paintings, as well as massive works in bronze. Many pieces feature strong and evocative depictions of Egyptian women from myth and history. Make the effort to visit this museum, which we only stopped in because we happened to walk by on the way to the subway station.
