In 1876 (Meiji 9), Dr. Clark arrived at his post at the Sapporo Agricultural School (Hokkaido University of today) as the first vice principal. On April 16, 1877 (Meiji 10) when he had to leave the school after giving much instruction, he gave the phrase "boys be ambitious" to students that were seeing him off at the Shimamatsu Communication Station. While everyone may know the famous phrase itself, it is in this Kitahiroshima City that Dr. Clark spoke the phrase. This attitude had supported the opening up of Hokkaido, and it is still inherited in the people's spirit.
