mansion / manor house / villa, ambassador's residence
This stately mansion and grounds was built in 1776 for Col. John Blaquiere, chief secretary to the British Government and bailiff of Phoenix Park, and thereby known as the Chief Secretary's Lodge. After Ireland's independence it was purchased by the U.S. government for a combined embassy and diplomatic residence. When the mission moved to larger quarters in 1949, it retained the Official Residence function. In the 1970s the wife of the ambassador renamed the property 'Deerfield', in recognition of the herd of deer that frequented the site.
