Val Verde Estate

USA / California / Montecito / Sycamore Canyon Road, 2549
park, design -to be removed/cleaned, celebrity home, garden, landscape, creek, place with historical importance, estate (manor / mansion land), open air museum

'Val Verde' is one of the few still remaining 'grand estates' from the early 1900s. Originally the Dater residence (and called 'Dias Felicitas' - an Arabic word meaning "place of pleasant delights") designed by architect Bertram Goodhue in 1915.
The very creative Wright Ludington, new owner in 1926, renamed it 'Val Verde' and did major architectural & landscape redesign with designer Lockwood DeForrest. The aesthetically-acute, flamboyant, and cultured Wright made it a center of the elite & celebrity international gay community. It is an exceptional design landmark.

Though set up as a non-profit public place in 1999, the Foundation's financial problems forced its sale in 2009 back to private ownership - a loss. The northern section, with gardens, tiled elements, the poolhouse, and sculpture gallery (within outline here) was sold in the 1950s and is now known as 'Pariso Verde.'
