The treasure of Hévíz
The thousands of years old turf bottom thermal lake is fed by the cold and warm sources rich in minerals found in the 38 m deep source cave.
The lake produced 410 l/sec., which means that water is changed every three days. The erupting water’s temperature at the source is 38,5 C and the lake’s temperature varies between 24 C and 38 C according to the season, which enables winter bathing.
The steady and constant water flow has a beneficial effect on the body as it keeps bathers lightly massaged during the whole time they spend in the lake.
Wildlife is unique due to the unique surroundings. The red water lily planted in the lake that flowers even in late autumn gives a beautiful sight.
The Hévíz Thermal Lake, managed by Hévíz Thermal bath Ltd. is considered a national treasure.
As a result of the tender submitted in October, 2002, the Hungarian National Committee of Cultural Heritage Preservation Office nominated the Hévíz lake and the hills of the Tapolca Basin and the natural treasures of the Tihany peninsula on the new Hungarian Expecting List as well as giving them a listed no. 2004. The Hungarian National Committee of Cultural Heritage Preservation Office enforced the list no. but recommended the ‘cultural landscape’ category on 2 March, 2004.
The nomination on the World Heritage expecting list was due to hundreds of years of development of Hévíz internal medicine and the balneotherapy based on unique medicinal factors, wildlife as well as the beneficial effect on the local and regional environment and culture. Our task for the present is to meet the criteria set in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention. As a precedent to this, we submitted the Management Plan of the Hévíz Thermal Lake Nature Reserve to the National Park Directorate of the upper Balaton region.
The area of Hévíz thermal lake was extended by 30 acres by the Ministry of Environmental and Water on 20 April, 2006.
