Dieppe - Operation Jubilee
On 19 August 1942, Dieppe was the site of "Operation Jubilee", a botched allied attempt to capture the port and the small seaside towns of Puys and Pourville. The landing started round 3a.m, and by 13:30, the operation had been brought to a close. There were 1,197 casualties, 1,500 wounded and 2,000 prisoners among the Allies, mostly among the Canadians. 34 Allied vessels and 108 aircraft were destroyed. The estimated toll for the Germans were 350 casualties, hundreds of wounded troops and 34 prisoners, with a loss of 48 aircraft.
