Baghzendan where is in fact the oldest part of Shahrood with about 20000 inhabitants. The people who are living in this area have absolutely independent culture and society, so they follow their own tradition and have different dialect and in some senses are isolated from other parts of the city. Even their graveyard is located separately in the same area where is geographically located at the center of the city while the main graveyard of Sharood is about 3KMs far from it. most of the gardens exist in this region and they are delivered by inheritance from generation to generation and Baghzendanians do not tend to sell these properties to strangers so that you can not see much constructions in this part of the city while there are many new building in other areas even in urban parts of Shahrood.
BaghZendan is the combination of two words in Persian language. "Bagh" and "Zendan" meaning "garden" and "prison" respectively. There is a deep digged hole in the hills of Baghzendan and according to the past generations this hole was used as prison by "Basoorian" authorities which was wholly surrounded by fruits gardens. so they called this area BaghZendan means the prison which is surrounded by the gardens.
