Ayr is blessed by a number of bridges at the town centre. The iron footbridge donated to the town by Turner, the brewer in Victorian days, the New Brig, first constructed in the 1770's and the star of this page, the Auld Brig.

Before this was built in the 15th Century, in 1470, a wooden bridge had served as the the only built crossing over the river to the town. Further downstream was a ford and in 1788 at this spot the New Brig was opened.

Robert Burns must have been a visionary prophet, as well as a great poet, for in the year just before it opened, he penned this wonderful fantasy, describing an argument between the two spirits of the bridges. The old simple faithful spirit of the Auld Brig and the foppish spirit of the new bridge as it took sure and certain shape.
