Remnants of the Briukhovychi Fort in Briukhovychi (Brzuchowice), today a northern suburb of Lviv. The construction began in 1887. Even then, the authorities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire realized that Russia's aggressive policies could eventually lead to a great war. Therefore, it was decided to fortify some cities of Galicia, including Lviv and Przemyśl. The construction of the fort was completed after 1912. Already during its construction, the fort lost its defensive value because of new military tactics that started to be used in the early twentieth century.
